Concentrated Sulphuric acid is standard with 98% purity. It is a highly corrosive, colourless to slightly yellow, oily mineral acid. The total production of Sulphuric Acid is around 190-200 Mio MT per annum. Fertilizers account for approx. 60% of the total consumption. It is one of the key raw materials in the production of Phosphoric Acid, Ammonium Phosphate fertilizers (DAP, MAP), Superphosphates (SSP, TSP) and Ammonium Sulphate.
Examples of applications
Sulphuric Acid is needed to extract the Phosphorous content from Phosphate Ore or Rock Phosphate to produce Phosphoric Acid or Superphosphates. In a reaction with Ammonia it forms Ammonium Sulphate. Concentrated Sulfuric Acid is rarely found in nature, but is produced by burning Sulphur into Sulfur Dioxide (SO2). Sulfur Dioxide is oxidized at high temperature into Sulfur Trioxide (SO3). As a strong dehydrating agent it removes water from sugar and other carbohydrates reducing the development of moulds. Other major applications include drain cleaners, Caprolactam (nylon), paints and pigments, metal cleaning, batteries and leather tanning.
